Øyfjell Bygdemuseum has a rich and varied collection of travelling wardrobes, costumes, rose paintings, household utensils and a variety of knick-knacks that give a vivid picture of life in the village through the ages. One of the most distinctive features is Norway’s second-largest beer hen – a fun and impressive sight for young and old alike.
The museum building itself is something else entirely. Built in wedge-shaped granite, it was constructed in 1931 with the aim of standing forever. The building is surrounded by a pleasant courtyard with several older houses, some of which are used for activities and exhibitions during the summer season.
In 2022, a new café building opened in the courtyard, making the museum visit even more complete – a great place to take a break and enjoy the atmosphere after a tour of the buildings and exhibitions.
Øyfjell Bygdemuseum is a great stop for those who want to become better acquainted with local culture, traditions and history – whether you are on a tour of Vinje or have Øyfjell as your destination.
