At the Defense Museum in Vinje, war history comes close, with stories from the fighting in Vinjesvingen and life in the villages during the Second World War.

Practical information

The Defense Museum in Vinje provides a strong and close encounter with the war history of Vinje and West Telemark. The museum is owned by the municipality of Vinje and is run by Venelaget for Vinje Defense Museum.

The main focus is on the fighting in Vinjesvingen in 1940 and everyday life during the war. Through objects, images and stories, you will gain insight into dramatic events, local fates and defense operations that took place in the local area. The exhibitions connect the great world history with what happened here – in the villages, in the landscape and among the people.

The museum also aims to disseminate the history of defense in Vinje and West Telemark more broadly, with particular emphasis on people and operations with local connections. Communication with young people is central, and school classes are therefore warmly welcomed to guided tours and educational programs.

The Defense Museum is open for guided tours during the summer season. It is also possible to book guided tours out of season by appointment.
